The prohibition on murder rests on a claim about what a human being is. Each person carries something of the divine, a spark of the consciousness that once spoke order out of chaos. To destroy that is to strike at the highest thing we can reach. The severity of the penalty measures the worth of what was destroyed.

Strip that conviction away and human life becomes negotiable, priced by whoever holds the power that day. The image of God in a person is the floor beneath every right you would ever claim for yourself. Take a life and the whole moral order comes for you. That weight is what keeps us human.

  1. Before you post the comment that would cut someone down, read their name out loud. Then decide whether you still want to send it.
  2. Give your full face to one person today, the cashier, the driver, the coworker you usually breeze past. Phone down, eyes up, long enough that they know they were seen.
  3. When the group chat turns on someone, do not pile on, and do not stay quiet either. Say the sentence that puts a floor under them, even if it costs you the laugh.

Who have I been treating as an obstacle instead of a person?
