Habakkuk 1:15 Meaning He Takes Up All of Them

He takes up all of them with the hook. He catches them in his net, and gathers them in his dragnet. Therefore he rejoices and is glad.

What does Habakkuk 1:15 mean?

The sea and its fish are the deep of a person and the living movements of soul that swim in it, and the hook and net are the mechanisms of the lower nature that haul those living things up out of their element to consume them. A consciousness ruled by appetite treats every stirring of life within as prey, catching each fine impulse with a baited point, dragging whole shoals of feeling into its keeping, and calling the harvest gladness.

The rejoicing is the false delight of the acquiring self, which mistakes capture for fulfillment. What is happening in a person is the plunder of the inner waters by the part of the self that only takes, until the deep is emptied and the taker still counts it joy.

The net that gathers indiscriminately is the grasping habit that makes no distinction, sweeping the higher and lower together into one haul.

The fish: the living movements of soul and feeling that swim in the deep waters of a person The angle and the net: the hooking, sweeping mechanisms of appetite that haul the inner life out of its element to be consumed The drag: the grasping habit that gathers every stirring at once, making no distinction between what should be kept and what released

Live Habakkuk 1:15 today

  1. Next time a feeling rises in you today, sadness, delight, a flare of anger, let it be there without doing anything with it. No posting it, no analyzing it, no feeding it. Let it swim.
  2. In one conversation, let a moment stay quiet instead of grabbing it with a joke or an opinion. Leave what the other person said alone and intact.
  3. When the urge to acquire hits under stress, the cart, the upgrade, the one more thing, pause and ask what you are actually hungry for. Then put the phone down for ten minutes before deciding.

What have I been catching today that I did not actually need?

Craving is the hook. Suffering comes not from the feelings that arise but from the grabbing that will not let them swim on.

Taoism · Zhuangzi

The fish trap exists for the fish. Once you have the fish you forget the trap, yet the grasping person collects traps and never tastes a thing.

Sufism · Rumi

You chase every passing scent, hunting pleasure through the market of the senses, and go home empty. The appetite that takes everything keeps nothing.
