Habakkuk 3:17 Meaning For Though the Fig Tree Doesn’t Flourish

For though the fig tree doesn’t flourish, nor fruit be in the vines; the labor of the olive fails, the fields yield no food; the flocks are cut off from the fold, and there is no herd in the stalls:

What does Habakkuk 3:17 mean?

Every outer support is named and then taken away. No blossom on the fig, no grape on the vine, the olive harvest gone, the fields bare, the fold empty, the stalls silent.

Ego v. Being

Every outer support is named and then taken away. No blossom on the fig, no grape on the vine, the olive harvest gone, the fields bare, the fold empty, the stalls silent. One by one they are removed. Nothing outside remains to hold onto.

The mind builds its footing from exactly these things, the yield and the herd and the full barn. When they are stripped, what a person has quietly used as ground drops out from under them. Here stands the moment before anything is rebuilt, where the whole outer world has been emptied and no harvest is left to explain who someone is.

  1. Say out loud the thing you are most afraid of losing, the job, the house, the plan, and then sit for a moment as the person who would still be here without it.
  2. If someone tells you they have lost something big, do not hand them a silver lining. Stay with them in the bare place and let them know you are not in a hurry to fix it.
  3. When a plan collapses at work and there is nothing left to point to, resist filling the hole with the next ambition right away. Stand in the empty stretch for a day and see who is standing there.

If the things you quietly stand on were taken away, what would be left holding you up?

Tao Te Ching

Be empty and you can be filled. What has let go of everything has nothing left to lose and so cannot be shaken.

Buddhism

All conditioned things are impermanent. When the props fall away, what remains was never a prop, and that is where peace actually lives.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Strip a thing down to what it is and you see how little of your life it was ever holding up. Nothing external was ever the ground you were standing on.
