Haggai 1:2 Meaning This Is What Yahweh of Armies Says

“This is what Yahweh of Armies says: These people say, ‘The time hasn’t yet come, the time for Yahweh’s house to be built.’ ”

What does Haggai 1:2 mean?

A delay that never names a date can never be proven wrong, which is why it can rule a life for years. Certainty held in common stops getting examined, because agreement itself supplies the references a person would otherwise have to earn.

A delay that never names a date can never be proven wrong, which is why it can rule a life for years.

Certainty held in common stops getting examined, because agreement itself supplies the references a person would otherwise have to earn. A verdict about timing sets the state, a state without urgency produces no action, and every year Yahweh's house stays unbuilt becomes fresh evidence that the season has not come.

Their own houses got finished, so the timber and the labor existed the whole time; the shortage was priority. A fence that every neighbor agrees on looks like the horizon, which is why the challenge to it arrived from outside, in a voice willing to name a day. Waiting on the right season hands the timing of a life to circumstance and costs a person the years in between, with the feeling of being reasonable left fully intact.

Live Haggai 1:2 today

  1. Pick the one thing you have been telling yourself you will start when things settle down, and put an actual date on your calendar today, this week if you can. Not the whole thing, just the first hour of it.
  2. Say the postponed thing out loud to one person who will ask you about it again. Agreement with yourself is too easy to renew, so hand someone else the date.
  3. When the day comes and it is a bad day, traffic was awful, work ran late, your phone will not stop, do the first fifteen minutes anyway. A bad fifteen minutes still ends the delay.

What have I been calling "not yet" for so long that I have stopped hearing myself say it?

Tao Te Ching 64

The journey of a thousand miles starts under your feet, right where you are standing. The waiting itself is the thing that never finishes.

Stoicism · Seneca, Letters

Seneca wrote that people postpone living as if they had an endless supply of days, and the whole of life gets spent getting ready for a life that never starts. Everything is cheap to us except the time we are burning.

Pirkei Avot 1:14

Hillel asked, if not now, when? A good intention with no date attached is not a plan, it is a way of staying comfortable.
