Haggai 2:5 Meaning This Is the Word That I Covenanted

This is the word that I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt, and my Spirit lived among you. ‘Don’t be afraid.’

What does Haggai 2:5 mean?

When you walked out of bondage, something came with you that could never be left behind: the aware presence at the center of who you are. It does not come and go with your circumstances.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

When you walked out of bondage, something came with you that could never be left behind: the aware presence at the center of who you are. It does not come and go with your circumstances. It remains.

Fear is the mind imagining a future in which you stand alone. But that presence is never in the future. It is here, in this very breath. Fear was only a thought about what has not yet come, and when you return your attention to the aliveness of now, you find the one thing that never left you, and there is nothing left to dread.

SUFISM

Sufism

People rebuilding something ruined stand there discouraged, sure they have been left to do it alone. The disease is fear dressed as realism, a heart forgetting the promise that once carried it out of slavery. Fear shrinks the room until God seems far off and the task impossible.

But the same Spirit that lived among them then has not moved away, present in the rubble as surely as in the rescue. The cure is remembrance: recall the old promise still standing, and let it steady discouraged hands. The God who once walked them out is near enough to say, do not be afraid.

Live Haggai 2:5 today

  1. Next time your chest tightens over something that has not happened yet, name it quietly to yourself: this is a thought about later. Then feel your feet on the floor and let now be what you are actually in.
  2. When a friend is spiraling about something in their future, do not rush to fix it. Just be calm and fully there with them, because steadiness is contagious in a way that advice usually is not.
  3. Before a stressful call or a meeting you have been dreading, take three slow breaths and feel the aliveness in your hands. Walk in carrying that, not the story about how it will go.

What were you afraid of today that never actually arrived?

What is deepest in you does not change when your conditions change. The valley stays itself through every season that passes over it.

Stoicism · Seneca

We suffer more in imagination than in reality. Most of the dread you carry is about a day that has not come.

Buddhism

Fear lives in the mind's picture of what might happen next. Return to this breath and the picture has no ground to stand on.
