Hebrews 11:11 Meaning By Faith

By faith, even Sarah herself received power to conceive, and she bore a child when she was past age, since she counted him faithful who had promised.

What does Hebrews 11:11 mean?

The verdict a person reaches about the one who made the promise is what unlocks the strength to act on it. A promise gets weighed twice, once against the evidence and once against the character of whoever gave it, and which weighing a person trusts sets the state everything else follows from.

The verdict a person reaches about the one who made the promise is what unlocks the strength to act on it.

A promise gets weighed twice, once against the evidence and once against the character of whoever gave it, and which weighing a person trusts sets the state everything else follows from. Read the odds and the body shuts down in advance; read the promiser and the body is simply not consulted.

Placing the weight on God's character rather than on her own age came first, and the power arrived downstream of it. Anyone waiting for circumstances to look plausible before trusting has the order reversed, and the strength stays locked behind a judgment they have not made.

Live Hebrews 11:11 today

  1. Instead of running the odds again today, ask yourself whether the one who made the promise has ever been unreliable. Decide on that, then act on the decision.
  2. When a friend lists all the reasons something will not work, ask them a different question: who told them it would, and what is that person actually like. Stay on that.
  3. In the moment your body goes cold before the hard thing, remind yourself that your energy is not the deciding factor here. Move first, let the strength catch up.

Are you weighing the promise, or the one who gave it?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Epictetus

What moves you is not the situation but your judgment about it. Change the judgment and the strength you thought you lacked turns out to have been waiting on it.

Sufism · Rumi

Do not count your own weakness, count who is holding you. The one who promised is the measure, not your arithmetic.

Bhagavad Gita 9

Trust the giver of the gift, not the odds against it. Whoever leans fully on that character is carried past what their own strength could reach.
