Hebrews 2:9 · World English Bible

Hebrews 2:9 Meaning But We See Him Who Has Been

But we see him who has been made a little lower than the angels, Jesus, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that by the grace of God he should taste of death for everyone.

What does Hebrews 2:9 mean?

When the promise is not yet visible, what a person keeps in view is the whole difference between endurance and collapse. A gap between what was promised and what can be verified breaks most people, and it breaks them through their eyes.

When the promise is not yet visible, what a person keeps in view is the whole difference between endurance and collapse.

A gap between what was promised and what can be verified breaks most people, and it breaks them through their eyes. Attention held on the missing evidence enlarges the missing evidence, the enlargement produces discouragement, and discouragement produces quitting long before anything had time to arrive. The move available is to aim at something equally real that can be seen today.

Jesus crowned by way of the dying, rather than spared it, is the one piece of evidence already visible, and whatever is held in view becomes the operative reality, setting the state a person waits inside. The sight was given by grace rather than achieved by staring harder. None of this shortens the wait; it decides whether a person is still standing when the wait ends.

Live Hebrews 2:9 today

  1. Instead of checking again for the thing that has not come, the reply, the test result, the offer, the change in someone, write down one thing you can actually see today that says the story is not over. Keep it where you will find it tomorrow.
  2. When a friend is in the long middle of something, do not promise them it will work out. Point at something real and present in their life that is already holding, and let them look at it with you.
  3. In the hour when the waiting feels heaviest, put your phone face down and do one small ordinary thing well. Dishes, a walk, one email answered kindly. Standing is its own answer.

What am I staring at that I cannot change, and what is right in front of me that I have stopped seeing?

Bhagavad Gita 2

Krishna tells Arjuna to do the work in front of him and let go of gripping the result, because clinging to an outcome you cannot see is what shakes a person apart. Steadiness comes from where the attention rests, not from the outcome arriving sooner.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Marcus wrote that the mind takes the color of whatever it dwells on most. Keep it fixed on what is missing and the missing becomes the whole world.

Sufism · Rumi

Rumi said the wound is the place where the light enters you. The proof you are looking for is often standing in the very thing you thought disqualified the promise.
