SUFISM
Ṣuḥba: Companionship on the road Sufis put great weight on ṣuḥba, the plain habit of keeping close company. Someone who is slipping almost never feels the slip, since it happens at the speed of ordinary days. Friends who see you often catch the change while it is small, and one honest word from them does more than months alone.
Ibn al-waqt: The child of the present moment Sufis call the seeker ibn al-waqt, a child of the hour they stand in. Yesterday's good intention cannot be borrowed, and tomorrow's plan does no work now. The heart softens or stiffens inside the day a person is living, and nobody gets to work on a different day.
Ghurūr: Being fooled about your own state Al-Ghazali devoted a whole book to ghurūr, the trick people play on themselves. Wrongdoing rarely announces itself; it comes as a fair excuse, a small delay, a story in which you are still fine. The story does the damage, because anyone who believes it sees no reason to change a thing.
Rayn: Rust settling on the heart The Quran speaks of rayn, a rust laid over hearts by what they earn. Each small thing waved away leaves a thin film, and no single one feels heavy enough to matter. Later the words that once moved a person slide right off them, and they cannot say when they stopped feeling anything.
Muḥāsaba: Taking stock of yourself Al-Ghazali urged muḥāsaba, a short daily look back, because one day is small enough to see clearly. Left for a month, the drift blends into normal life and nothing looks wrong. When the day is still fresh, the small turn someone took stays visible and easy to undo.
