Hebrews 4:14 Meaning Having Then a Great High Priest

Having then a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let’s hold tightly to our confession.

What does Hebrews 4:14 mean?

A priest is someone who stands between God and people, carrying our needs to him and bringing his life back to us. Christ does that work now, permanently, from inside heaven itself, which means no part of your life is too far out for him to reach and hand over to the Father.

So holding on to what you believe is not white-knuckled willpower. You keep your grip because someone on the other end already has hold of you, and he is not a distant official but one of us, a real man who knows from the inside what it costs to stay faithful when everything argues against it.

Live Hebrews 4:14 today

  1. Next time you are alone in the car or waiting for the kettle, say the plainest thing you believe out loud, even if it is only one sentence. Saying it keeps it yours.
  2. Tell one person this week about something you are still holding to, not to convince them, just so it is spoken in front of a human being. A text is enough if that is what you have.
  3. When a day goes sideways at work and your faith feels thin, do not try to feel more. Keep doing the next ordinary thing and let someone stronger do the gripping.

What am I trying to hold up with willpower that is already being held by someone else?

The seeker is not left to climb alone. The divine meets each person from inside their own heart, nearer than their own effort, and the holding on is answered by a holding.

Sufism · Rumi

The longing you feel for God is already the proof that he is calling you. The cry and the answer come from the same place, so your reaching is not a shot into the dark.

Judaism · Talmudic teaching

Whoever takes one step toward heaven finds heaven has come many steps toward them. The effort is small and the response is out of all proportion to it.
