What does Hebrews 9:13 mean?

The old sacrifices reach only the outer man, cleansing the flesh but never the awareness behind it. Blood is the life-force, and the blood of bulls and goats is the animal energy of the lower nature spent to quiet the body's guilt for a season.

The old sacrifices reach only the outer man, cleansing the flesh but never the awareness behind it. Blood is the life-force, and the blood of bulls and goats is the animal energy of the lower nature spent to quiet the body's guilt for a season. The heifer reduced to ashes is the raw physical vitality burned down and its remains scattered to touch what is defiled from the outside. All of this purifies the surface, the sensory and appetitive part, without ever entering the mind where the real uncleanness lives. The point being built toward is that ritual worked on the body can settle the body only, and the deeper cleansing has to happen where a person actually thinks and feels.

Blood: the life-force of the creature, the animal energy of the lower nature offered up Bulls and goats: the strong and stubborn drives of the body, its raw untamed power Ashes of the heifer: physical vitality burned down to residue, able to touch only the outer defilement

Live Hebrews 9:13 today

  1. Today, when you tidy something, the desk, the inbox, the camera roll, ask whether you are clearing the thing or avoiding the thing. One of those actually helps.
  2. If you snapped at someone, do more than the quick "sorry" that closes the subject. Say what you actually did, and let it be slightly uncomfortable. That is the part that lands.
  3. When stress rises and you reach for the usual, the snack, the scroll, the extra coffee, it will quiet your body for twenty minutes and leave your mind where it was. Have it if you want, and name what it is not fixing.

What have I been cleaning on the outside instead of dealing with?

The same truth in other traditions

Buddhism · Vatthupama Sutta

The Buddha tells a brahmin that bathing in sacred rivers washes nothing: one who is clean in thought is already bathed wherever they are.

Taoism · Chuang Tzu

He laughed at the idea that elaborate observance makes a person good. You can scrub the outside forever and never touch what is actually driving you.

Judaism · Mishnah Yoma 8:9

It teaches that the day's atonement rites do nothing for wrongs between people until the person actually makes it right. The ceremony cannot do the part the heart has to do.
