Hosea 11:7 Meaning My People Are Determined to Turn From

My people are determined to turn from me. Though they call to the Most High, he certainly won’t exalt them.

What does Hosea 11:7 mean?

The mind is bent toward wandering. Called again and again into presence, it slides back into the familiar current of past and future, of problem and complaint, because the known feels safer than the open stillness of now.

Ego v. Being

The mind is bent toward wandering. Called again and again into presence, it slides back into the familiar current of past and future, of problem and complaint, because the known feels safer than the open stillness of now. This is the pull of the unconscious, always drawing you away from the aliveness of this moment.

To exalt the highest is simply to turn your attention fully to what is here, without the story the mind wraps around it. No one can do this for you by calling from outside. The return happens only when you yourself become present, and each time you do, the wandering quietly loses its hold.

Live Hosea 11:7 today

  1. The next time you reach for your phone out of habit, pause with your hand on it and feel the room for three breaths before you unlock it. If you still want to open it, open it.
  2. When someone is talking to you and your mind slides off into what you have to do later, let it slide, then come back to their face and their voice without scolding yourself for leaving.
  3. When a stressful email lands and your thoughts start racing ahead into every outcome, put both feet flat on the floor and feel them there for a moment before you type a single word.

How many times today could you come back, if coming back cost you nothing but a breath?

The same truth in other traditions

Dhammapada

The mind is restless and hard to guard, running wherever it likes. The one who steadies it finds a peace nothing outside can give.

Tao Te Ching 16

Return to the root. Everything rushes outward and grows busy, but each thing comes back to the stillness it came from, and that returning is the real work.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

You keep wandering off, then calling yourself back. Do not be discouraged by how often you must return. Be glad you can return at all.
