Hosea 12:6 Meaning Therefore Turn to Your God

Therefore turn to your God. Keep kindness and justice, and wait continually for your God.

What does Hosea 12:6 mean?

Saraṇagamana: Going for refuge Placing your reliance somewhere and leaning your full weight on it. Turning is a matter of which way you face, so a man standing one step from a doorway with his back to it is still outside.

Saraṇagamana: Going for refuge Placing your reliance somewhere and leaning your full weight on it. Turning is a matter of which way you face, so a man standing one step from a doorway with his back to it is still outside. Jacob walked the whole road back to Bethel to stand where he had already stood once, and that turn gets made in a single motion and then made again the next morning.

Mettā: Loving-kindness Unconditional goodwill toward beings. Kindness gets kept the way a promise gets kept, held to on the days the other person has done nothing to earn it, which is precisely the ground Israel stands on here after all its bargaining and grasping. Warmth that survives disappointment has to be fed, like a fire someone stacks each morning whether or not the house has gone cold.

Sīla: Virtue Conduct held as a standing commitment. Justice stands beside kindness because warmth on its own will still short a customer at the counter, and a merchant with weighted scales in his hand follows in Hosea's very next breath. An honest weight is a small thing, decided before the buyer walks in and repeated every time the pan drops.

Appamāda: Heedfulness The care that keeps something from slipping away. Keep is a watchman's word, and kindness and justice can be lost without anyone ever deciding to lose them, the way an unlatched gate swings open on its own overnight. The guarding, then, is plain and daily, done in the small unattended moments where both go missing.

Khanti: Patient endurance The strength to bear delay without souring. Waiting continually assumes the answer is late, and the weight of it lands in the second year, when waiting begins to feel like being ignored. A farmer who has finished sowing does no more digging; he stands at the edge of the field through the dry weeks and leaves the ground alone.

Saddhā: Confidence Trust extended toward what you have not yet seen for yourself. For your God gives the waiting someone at the end of it, which makes it closer to sitting up for a traveler who said he would come than to staring down an empty road. Jacob held on in the dark until daybreak, and that holding on was itself the trust, long before any blessing was spoken.

Live Hosea 12:6 today

  1. Make one turn today that you keep putting off, the apology, the honest number on the form, the call home. Make it this morning, and then make it again tomorrow if it did not hold.
  2. Be straight with one person who cannot do anything for you, the person at the counter, the support agent on the phone, the new hire. Fair treatment when it costs you nothing to be unfair is the whole test.
  3. When an answer you are waiting on does not come this week, stop refreshing and go about your day. Waiting well looks like living normally while the thing stays unresolved.

What are you waiting on, and what would change if you trusted there was someone at the end of the wait?

Tao Te Ching 16

All things return to the root, and in that returning they find their rest. Turning back is not a defeat, it is the natural motion of anything alive.

The world stands on truth, justice and peace, and these are held by practice rather than by feeling. You keep them the way you keep a lamp lit, by attending to it.

No one becomes good by intending it. Character is what repeated acts leave behind, and so it is decided in small moments, not in resolutions.
