Hosea 14:3 Meaning Assyria Can’t Save Us

Assyria can’t save us. We won’t ride on horses; neither will we say any more to the work of our hands, ‘Our gods!’ for in you the fatherless finds mercy.

What does Hosea 14:3 mean?

The empire will not save you, nor the swift horse, nor anything your own hands have built to stand between you and your fear. These are the ego's idols, the possessions and achievements and alliances the mind clutches for a sense of self, whispering that they are what you are.

Ego v. Being

The empire will not save you, nor the swift horse, nor anything your own hands have built to stand between you and your fear. These are the ego's idols, the possessions and achievements and alliances the mind clutches for a sense of self, whispering that they are what you are.

The fatherless one is the person stripped of every outer support, who has nothing left to lean on but this present moment. And that is exactly where mercy is found. When you stop looking to your creations to complete you, you discover that the wholeness you were seeking was already here, in the still presence that needs no protection at all.

Self-Help

Until you name the exact thing you will run back to, you have not closed anything.

A fallback survives as long as it stays unspoken. A general resolve leaves every particular exit intact, and under pressure the mind runs to whichever one was never said out loud.

The alliance, the war horses, the handmade god answer one fear of standing unprotected. Saying each and refusing it removes the road back, and what replaces them is a belief that the fatherless are held by God. That belief sets the state a person meets fear in, the state sets what they reach for, and repeated reaching becomes character. Leave one exit unnamed and the whole return stays provisional, available for reversal on the first frightening morning.

  2. Tell one person something true about how you are doing without first making it sound impressive or fine.
  3. When the thing you were counting on falls through, a plan, a job, a reply that never came, stand still in the gap for a moment before you rush to fill it.

What are you holding onto because you are afraid of who you would be without it?
