Whatever a person believes paid them is where they will go the next time a need gets loud.

A need met in goods a person can hold is the hardest kind to question. Connection and significance arrived as fruit, so the story about who supplied it hardened into certainty; certainty set her direction, direction set the habit, and the habit became a life organized around suppliers who were never the source.

A belief that keeps getting paid cannot be argued out of a person, only interrupted, and God chooses the interruption over letting the account stand. The cost of a vehicle that good is that a woman can spend years loyal to it and never once meet the one who stocked it.

Live Hosea 2:12 today

  1. Think of one good thing in your life you are proud of, and trace it back honestly past your own effort to the people and breaks that made it possible. Say thank you for one of them, even just under your breath.
  2. Thank someone today for something that has become invisible because it is reliable, the person who always answers, who always cooks, who always covers. Be specific, not general.
  3. When something gets taken away today, a plan, a client, a convenience, resist the first story your mind writes about it and sit with the loss plainly for a minute before you go looking for a replacement.

Who do you credit when things go well, and is that story actually true?

Tao Te Ching 38

When people lose touch with the source, they start keeping score with gifts and gestures. The goods go on arriving while the thing that fed them is forgotten.

Judaism · Talmudic teaching on blessing food

One who enjoys this world without first saying a blessing is treated as having stolen it. The bread is real; taking it as self-supplied is the theft.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Never say you lost a thing, say you gave it back. It was lent while you held it, and holding it loosely is the only honest way to hold it.
