BUDDHISM
Khanti: Patient endurance Khanti is the strength to bear a wrong without returning it. A wife who left for other lovers hears a proposal of marriage come back to her, which means the grievance had already been set down before the first word was spoken. Most people would bar that door and change the lock; holding it open, year after year, is the whole of the work being done here.
Mettā: Loving kindness Mettā is friendliness that wishes another well and asks nothing back. Set into the betrothal itself, it puts the warmth on the side of the one proposing, so the bond no longer hangs on whether she has earned it or can hold up her end. Sunlight falls on the neglected field the same as on the tended one, and this promise is offered in that manner.
Karuṇā: Compassion Karuṇā is the heart moving toward someone in pain. She comes back stripped and hungry, her lovers finished with her, and compassion meets that condition first, before any account of how she got there is opened. Reaching for a person who has fallen in the street is the same motion; the questions can wait until they are standing.
Sīla: Moral conduct Sīla is conduct held straight. Righteousness and justice stand in the vow beside the tenderness, so the promise reaches down into daily treatment: how she is addressed, what she is owed, how a quarrel is allowed to end. Warmth needs fair dealing underneath it the way a roof needs walls, and a bond meant to last forever will be tested on ordinary days more than on grand ones.
Adhiṭṭhāna: Unwavering resolve Adhiṭṭhāna is a determination that holds once it is made. Forever is fixed at the outset, ahead of the qualities that fill it, so the length of the bond stops depending on what she does next month. An anchor holds through weather it never saw coming, and a vow set down this way is meant to do the same.
Buddhism lens
Who am I still making earn a place I could simply give them?
The wise teacher gives up on no one and throws nothing away. What looks ruined is still material, and that refusal to discard is the whole of their skill.
Even the worst wrongdoer who turns with an undivided heart is to be counted among the good. The turning itself is enough; the past record is not consulted first.
When someone wrongs you, keep being good to them the way a vine keeps giving grapes to whoever walks past. Your kindness was never a payment for their behavior.
