A society comes apart from the inside when truth drains out of it, and everything else that holds people together goes with it. The charge laid against the land is precise. No truth, no mercy, no knowledge of the highest thing. These are not three separate failures but one failure seen from three sides. When a people stop saying what is so, mercy and the sense of the sacred cannot survive the vacuum left behind.

Truth is the ground that trust and cooperation stand on, and where it is gone the whole structure of shared life loses its footing. Speech that no longer aims at what is out there poisons everyone who leans on it, which is everyone. The quarrel is not over ritual. A people who abandon truthful speech have pulled the foundation out from under their own house, and it falls.

Live Hosea 4:1 today

  1. Catch one small exaggeration before it leaves your mouth today and say the plainer, less flattering version instead.
  2. When someone tells you something and you half believe it, ask where it came from before you pass it on. In the group chat, be the one who checks.
  3. Under pressure in a meeting or an email, resist the comfortable half truth that protects you. Say what is so, even when it costs you a little standing.

Where have I let my words drift from what is actually true?

The same truth in other traditions

Confucianism · Analects

If words lose their meaning, nothing else can stand. Set language straight and the rest of shared life can hold together.

Buddhism · Right Speech

Speech that does not aim at what is true unravels trust, and trust is what every community rests on. Guard it as a foundation, not a preference.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Tell the truth about what is actually in front of you. A mind that lies to itself cannot be just toward anyone else.
