Hosea 5:4 · World English Bible

Hosea 5:4 Meaning Their Deeds Won’t Allow Them to Turn

Their deeds won’t allow them to turn to their God; for the spirit of prostitution is within them, and they don’t know Yahweh.

What does Hosea 5:4 mean?

A people can be so absorbed in their own doings that they never turn back toward the source of life. The endless seeking outside, chasing one form after another to feel whole, is what keeps them from it.

Ego v. Being

A people can be so absorbed in their own doings that they never turn back toward the source of life. The endless seeking outside, chasing one form after another to feel whole, is what keeps them from it. This restless reaching is a spirit in the midst of them, a compulsion that always looks elsewhere for what can only be found within.

And because their attention is always spent outward, they have never actually known the presence beneath their lives. Knowing here is not belief or information. It is direct contact with being. They cannot arrive at it while their whole momentum carries them away from the still center where alone it can be felt.

  2. When someone asks how you are, stop and actually check before answering. Give them the real one sentence instead of the automatic one.
  3. In the middle of a packed day, feel your hands and your breath for ten seconds. Let the momentum break just long enough to be here.

When was the last time your attention turned inward instead of outward?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching 47

You do not have to go anywhere to know what matters. Travel far enough outward and you lose the thread entirely.

Sufism · Rumi

You knock on every door in the city looking for home, while home stands open behind you.

Upanishads

The senses face outward, so people chase the world. The wise turn the attention around and find the source.
