Hosea 6:4 · World English Bible

Hosea 6:4 Meaning Ephraim

Ephraim, what shall I do to you? Judah, what shall I do to you? For your love is like a morning cloud, and like the dew that disappears early.

What does Hosea 6:4 mean?

A surge of feeling proves nothing; what a person returns to after it burns off is the actual life. Sincerity predicts behavior poorly, because emotion evaporates on its own schedule while the default underneath keeps running the day.

A surge of feeling proves nothing; what a person returns to after it burns off is the actual life.

Sincerity predicts behavior poorly, because emotion evaporates on its own schedule while the default underneath keeps running the day. Devotion arriving as a surge and attached to no practice leaves nothing behind when the mood lifts; no belief was rebuilt, no decision was cut off from retreat, so the old home state has the controls back by mid morning.

Yahweh's difficulty is repeatability, which is why the question is what to do with them rather than whether they meant it. Loyalty that runs on intensity needs a fresh surge for every act of obedience, and surges cannot be produced on demand. The cost lands on everyone counting on them, since promises made at the peak come due in hours when the default is back in charge.

Live Hosea 6:4 today

  1. Take the thing you promised yourself in a good mood last week and do the smallest possible version of it today, even though the mood is gone. Ten minutes, badly, counts.
  2. With one person, make a promise smaller than you want to make. Say "I'll text you Thursday" instead of "we should do this all the time," then actually text on Thursday.
  3. When a hard day makes you want to swear off something or swear on something, write it down instead of saying it, and look at the note tomorrow when you are calm. Decide then.

What have I promised at my best that I have never once kept on an ordinary morning?

The same truth in other traditions

Confucius · Analects

He said the person of real character is steady in small daily things, while the showy one puts on a fine display and then has nothing left to stand on.

Zen · Dogen

Practice is not the thrill that arrives and leaves. It is sitting down again the next morning, when nothing feels special at all.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Do not announce what you intend to become. Show it by what you do when the excitement has worn off, because habit, not feeling, is what carries a person.
