Hosea 7:9 Meaning Strangers Have Devoured His Strength

Strangers have devoured his strength, and he doesn’t realize it. Indeed, gray hairs are here and there on him, and he doesn’t realize it.

What does Hosea 7:9 mean?

Decline hides from the person living it, because a self-image updates far slower than the facts it was built on. Strength leaves on a schedule too slow to feel, so the picture assembled in the strong years keeps issuing orders long after the body stopped funding them.

Decline hides from the person living it, because a self-image updates far slower than the facts it was built on.

Strength leaves on a schedule too slow to feel, so the picture assembled in the strong years keeps issuing orders long after the body stopped funding them. Each foreign alliance took a little and looked like a bargain, because every single transaction was small enough to fit inside the old model of the whole.

That is what makes an unrevised self-image expensive. A nation keeps making commitments sized to strength it no longer has, and the commitments finish the erosion the strangers started. The bill for never checking arrives all at once, on the day something finally requires the power the map still claims, and by then there is no time left to build it.

Live Hosea 7:9 today

  1. Check one real number today instead of your sense of it. The bank balance, the sleep hours, how many days since you called your mom. Just look.
  2. Ask someone who sees you often, a partner, a coworker, a friend, what has changed about you in the last two years. Then stay quiet long enough to hear the whole answer.
  3. The next time you say yes to something because you are the person who always handles it, pause and ask whether that was true this year or just true once.

Where am I still spending a strength I had five years ago?

Tao Te Ching 33

Knowing other people is a kind of cleverness. Knowing yourself is the harder sight, and without it a person spends strength they no longer have.

Stoicism · Seneca

He warned that we lose life in small pieces we never feel leaving, and the loss is finished long before we admit it began.

Buddhism · the teaching on impermanence

Everything you count on is quietly changing, including your own body and skill. Looking directly at that is not gloom, it is the only way to plan honestly.
