Vipallāsa: Inverted Perception Seeing runs upside down when something made is taken for something lasting. The calf came out of a furnace, cooled on its stand, and could still be dented with a hammer, yet the hands that shaped it turn around and ask it for rain.

BUDDHISM
Vipallāsa: Inverted Perception Seeing runs upside down when something made is taken for something lasting. The calf came out of a furnace, cooled on its stand, and could still be dented with a hammer, yet the hands that shaped it turn around and ask it for rain. Trouble sits in the eye rather than in the metal; gold stays gold until someone kneels.
Sīlabbata-parāmāsa: Clinging to Rites and Observances This fetter treats correct ritual as the thing that makes a person clean. Around the calf stands a working religion: festivals kept, offerings brought, priests paid, everything performed on schedule, and the performance itself is expected to deliver purity. Being capable of purity stays out of reach while the machinery is trusted to do the washing.
Āditta: Burning Greed, hatred, and delusion are described as a fire, and a mind under them is aflame. Heat comes down on Samaria, and it is the same heat that has been fed in the shrine courtyard season after season, offering after offering. A false center keeps the fuel coming, so devotion there feeds the very thing it claims to appease.
Paṭinissagga: Relinquishment Relinquishment is the putting down of what the hand has been holding. Throwing the calf out is bodily work: off its pedestal, through the door, out of the festival calendar and the temple accounts. A hand curled shut for three generations learns release only by opening, and the call comes now, ahead of any change in how anyone feels about it.
Anusaya: Underlying Tendency Tendencies lie dormant beneath the surface, waiting for conditions to wake them. Asking how long is fair, since a calf can be smashed in an afternoon while the appetite that wanted a calf is awake again by morning. Break one image and the hunger for a god who can be handled survives it, ready to shape the next one out of whatever is nearby.
Visuddhi: Purification Purification moves in stages, each resting on the one before it. Capacity for purity gets built the way a stony field becomes soil, cleared season after season, so how long has an honest answer: as long as the clearing takes. Conduct steadies first, then attention, then seeing, and no royal decree from Samaria shortens that order.
Buddhism lens
If the thing you lean on were gone tomorrow, what would you reach for by the end of the week?
What we make is useful because of the emptiness in it, not the clay. Mistake the vessel for the thing it holds and you end up serving your own handiwork.
Cut back a desire and it grows again from the root unless the root is pulled. The object can be thrown out in a day; the appetite for it rises with the sun.
We are not disturbed by things but by what we decide they are worth. The power you feel in a thing was handed to it by you.
