Isaiah 10:13 Meaning For He Has Said

For he has said, “By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I have understanding. I have removed the boundaries of the peoples, and have robbed their treasures. Like a valiant man I have brought down their rulers.

What does Isaiah 10:13 mean?

By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom. Such words come from a self swollen with its own doing, certain it alone authored every result.

Ego v. Being

By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom. Such words come from a self swollen with its own doing, certain it alone authored every result. Assyria breaks borders and empties treasuries and credits all of it to one small word: I.

That little word carries the whole illusion. When a person believes he alone moves the world, he stops feeling the larger life that flows through his hands. The power was always borrowed. The ego forgets this the moment it starts counting its conquests, and that forgetting is where its fall begins.

Live Isaiah 10:13 today

  1. When something at work goes well today, sit with it a second before you tell the story. See how much of it came from people, timing, and plain luck you had no hand in.
  2. Next time someone thanks you, resist the small urge to explain how hard you worked for it. Just say thank you back, and let the moment stay simple.
  3. In an argument where you are sure you are right because you are the one who built the thing, pause. Ask what you were handed before you ask what you made.

Where in your life are you quietly keeping score of your own doing?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching 2

The sage acts without claiming. Work gets done and he does not stand over it saying it was his, and because he takes no credit, nothing he builds turns against him.

Bhagavad Gita 3

Actions move through a person the way weather moves through a valley. The one who says "I am the doer" has mistaken himself for the whole sky.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Your effort is yours. The outcome never was. Confusing the two is the root of every later shock.
