PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

Light and fire come from one source in the soul. People want the holy to be a gentle light that only warms and shows the way. But the center that gives off that light is alive, and living things burn. The thorns and briers stand for the tangled, dead growth inside a person: old defenses, false beliefs, the dry habits that choke off real life.

When that inner center finally comes into full awareness, it does not prune the undergrowth. It burns it. Seeing yourself honestly destroys the false parts that only survived because no one had looked at them, and this can happen all at once, in a single day.

Live Isaiah 10:17 today

  1. Sit down with one belief about yourself you have carried for years without examining it, and look straight at it for ten minutes. If it falls apart, let it fall apart today rather than next year.
  2. When someone close to you says something true about you that stings, do not defend. Say "that might be right, let me sit with it," and mean it.
  3. Next time you catch yourself performing a version of yourself in an email or a group chat, stop mid-sentence and write the plainer, truer thing instead. Send that one.

What in me has only survived because I never looked at it directly?

The same truth in other traditions

Sufism · Rumi

Rumi says the chickpea must boil, and when it begs to be taken off the heat the cook answers that the boiling is the love. The burning is not against you, it is what makes you edible.

Zen

A teacher said to burn up all your words and concepts. The honest look at yourself does not trim the false ideas carefully, it leaves ash where the whole tangle used to stand.

Hinduism · Bhagavad Gita 4

The fire of real knowing turns everything unreal to ashes. What was never true cannot survive being clearly seen.
