EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Whatever in you has grown tall and proud, whatever the ego has built up to feel superior and secure, will one day be cut down. Life sees to this. The high things of the mind cannot stand forever, because they were never real to begin with.

When they fall, it feels like terror, for the ego experiences its own diminishment as death. Yet what is humbled is only the false self. The person you truly are cannot be cut down. So the collapse you fear is not destruction. It is the removal of everything that stood between you and the stillness underneath.

Nothing planted in arrogance grows forever. The tallest tree in the forest, the one that crowded out the light beneath it, is the tree marked for the axe, and its height is the reason. Pride mistakes elevation for permanence and forgets that what rises highest has the farthest to fall.

The correction here is impersonal, almost botanical, a lopping of what has grown past its proper bounds. Reality prunes what men will not. A person who inflates himself beyond what he has earned is cutting the notch the storm will finish. Stay in proportion to what you are, and you keep your footing.

Live Isaiah 10:33 today

  1. Think of one thing you would hate to be seen failing at. Say it to yourself plainly, and feel how much energy you spend keeping that one thing upright.
  2. When someone corrects you today, in a meeting or a group chat, let the correction land without defending. See what is actually hurt, and whether it is really you.
  3. If a plan falls apart this week, a deal, a trip, a role you wanted, stay with the empty feeling for a minute instead of filling it. Something steadier is usually sitting right underneath.

What part of you is afraid of being made smaller, and what would still be there if it was?
