Fear and confidence are two settings on the same inner machine, and a person decides which one runs by choosing where he rests his whole weight. When a man leans on something larger and steadier than his own nerves, the trembling has nowhere left to stand.

CYBERNETICS
Fear and confidence are two settings on the same inner machine, and a person decides which one runs by choosing where he rests his whole weight. When a man leans on something larger and steadier than his own nerves, the trembling has nowhere left to stand. The trust comes first, and the fear drains out behind it, the way tension leaves a shoulder once the hand lets the load be carried elsewhere.
Strength here is not manufactured by effort. It arrives as a byproduct of a self-image that has stopped bracing for disaster and started expecting rescue. A song rises in a person for the same reason: the deliverance he counted on has quietly become the ground he already stands on.

What am I still holding with both hands that was never mine to carry?
Water does not fight or force its way, yet nothing outlasts it. The person who stops straining and settles into something deeper than his own effort finds that the strength was never his to manufacture.
What shakes us is not the event but our grip on it. Loosen the grip on what was never yours to hold, and the fear has nothing to hold onto either.
The one who hands over the weight of the outcome acts without trembling. Peace is not the reward for a steady hand, it is what shows up once the hand stops clenching.
