Isaiah 2:22 Meaning Stop Trusting in Man

Stop trusting in man, whose breath is in his nostrils; for of what account is he?

What does Isaiah 2:22 mean?

A person leans their whole weight on another human, whose life hangs on the next breath in and out. That thread of air holds him upright.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

A person leans their whole weight on another human, whose life hangs on the next breath in and out. That thread of air holds him upright. Here now, gone in a moment. To build one's ground on something so fragile is to stand on smoke.

The mind keeps reaching for someone else to be its foundation, its source, its final answer. Yet the one it reaches for is passing too, borrowing the same breath, held up by nothing lasting. When the leaning stops, the search settles onto what does not vanish with the next breath. What holds a life steady was never the fragile person the mind was clutching.

Live Isaiah 2:22 today

  1. If you keep checking whether one particular person has replied, put the phone face down for an hour and sit with the gap. The waiting feels thin at first, then surprisingly roomy.
  2. With someone you love today, your partner, a parent, a friend, let them be a person rather than your foundation. Enjoy them without needing them to hold your whole weight, and the affection gets lighter for both of you.
  3. When a boss, a client or a comment section hands down a verdict on you today, feel the urge to let their words decide what you are. Breathe, and let the verdict be their opinion passing through, not the floor you stand on.

Whose approval am I quietly treating as the ground under my feet?

The same truth in other traditions

Buddhism · the three marks of existence

Everything made of parts comes apart, and every person you love is in motion, breath by breath. Leaning your whole weight on what is passing is the quiet root of grief.

Stoicism · Epictetus

He taught that the opinions, approval and affection of other people are simply not in your hands. Hang your peace on them and you have handed your peace to a stranger.

Tao Te Ching

The sage rests on the way itself, not on the favor of princes. What never leaves cannot be taken from you.
