Isaiah 23:2 Meaning Be Still

Be still, you inhabitants of the coast, you whom the merchants of Sidon that pass over the sea, have replenished.

What does Isaiah 23:2 mean?

A trading island lives on what the ships bring in. Wealth crosses the water, the harbor fills, and the people come to feel that their fullness arrives from outside them.

Ego v. Being

A trading island lives on what the ships bring in. Wealth crosses the water, the harbor fills, and the people come to feel that their fullness arrives from outside them. When everything they own comes over the sea, their sense of who they are floats on the tide of goods and news.

So the word is: be still. Underneath the traffic of arriving and selling, something quiet was already there and did not depend on the next cargo. When the noise of getting drops away, a person meets the ground that no merchant filled and no storm can empty. That stillness was never bought.

Live Isaiah 23:2 today

  1. Go ten minutes without checking anything incoming, no email, no messages, no feed. Sit with the odd feeling that nothing is arriving, and see what is still here.
  2. Spend time with someone today without telling them a single thing you got, bought, achieved, or heard. Just be with them, which is enough.
  3. When a package, a payment, or a piece of news lands and gives you a lift, enjoy it and then feel underneath it. Something steadier was there before the delivery.

How much of how you feel today arrived from outside you?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching

Accept the world's noise and your own fullness together, but know which one arrived from outside. Returning to the root is called stillness.

Buddhism · Dhammapada

There is no satisfying the thirst with more. Craving ends not when the ships keep coming but when the wanting is seen through.

Hinduism · Upanishads

What you are looking for came in with nothing and will go out with nothing taken. The self is not assembled out of what you acquired.
