Isaiah 30:22 Meaning You Shall Defile the Overlaying

You shall defile the overlaying of your engraved images of silver, and the plating of your molten images of gold. You shall cast them away as an unclean thing. You shall tell it, “Go away!”

What does Isaiah 30:22 mean?

You will never throw away what you still find beautiful, so change what the thing means before you try. Anything linked to pleasure stays, and no amount of resolve outlasts that link.

You will never throw away what you still find beautiful, so change what the thing means before you try.

Anything linked to pleasure stays, and no amount of resolve outlasts that link. The link is what has to move: when silver plating registers as something soiled, disgust replaces wanting, disgust creates distance, and distance does the discarding without a struggle.

Speaking to it finishes the job. Words said out loud put a person on record with themselves, and being on record is harder to reverse in a weak hour than a private intention ever was. The price is the hedge, the quiet option of keeping the gold in a back room in case the new way does not work out, and whoever keeps the hedge has kept the god.

Live Isaiah 30:22 today

  1. Take the habit you keep meaning to quit and write down plainly what it actually gives you and what it actually takes. Read it back to yourself out loud.
  2. Tell one person the specific thing you are putting down and when. Being on record with someone is harder to walk back than a private plan.
  3. Then delete the app, cancel the subscription, throw out the stash, whatever the real version is for you. Do not keep a copy in case the new way does not work out.

What am I still keeping a quiet backup of, in case I decide I want it again?

Buddhism

Seeing clearly what a craving actually gives you is what loosens it. Willpower alone never outlasts the pull.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Strip the thing of its glamour and describe it as it is. Desire fades when the shine is gone from the description.

Tao Te Ching

The bright colors blind the eye and the rich flavors dull the tongue. What looked like treasure was quietly costing you your senses.
