Isaiah 33:14 · World English Bible

Isaiah 33:14 Meaning The Sinners in Zion Are Afraid

The sinners in Zion are afraid. Trembling has seized the godless ones. Who among us can live with the devouring fire? Who among us can live with everlasting burning?

What does Isaiah 33:14 mean?

The devouring fire is not a punishment from outside. It is the power at the deep center of a person, the force people have always called God, and it burns because it is real and cannot be bargained with.

PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

The devouring fire is not a punishment from outside. It is the power at the deep center of a person, the force people have always called God, and it burns because it is real and cannot be bargained with. Those who tremble lived on the surface and pushed their darker parts out of sight. When that buried self rises, meeting it feels like being consumed.

But the fire destroys only what is false. The one who can stand in it has already faced his own hidden self, so nothing in him is left pretending and the fire finds nothing to burn. That is why he can live beside a flame that still terrifies everyone hiding from themselves.

Live Isaiah 33:14 today

  1. Tonight, run back through your day and name one thing you did that you would rather not look at. No punishing yourself, just see it plainly and say it in your own words.
  2. Admit one small ordinary failing out loud to someone today, to your partner or a friend over coffee. The relief of not managing an image is immediate.
  3. When you are criticized in front of others, try not defending for one breath. If part of it is true, say so. What you have already faced in yourself cannot be used against you.

What part of myself am I still hiding, and what would it cost me to simply look at it?

Rumi welcomes every visitor at the door, the dark moods included, because each was sent for a reason. The one who has greeted them all has nothing left to be ambushed by.

Zen

The teachers say the fire burns only your illusions. Whoever has already seen through himself can walk straight into it and find nothing of his own catching.

Stoicism · Seneca

Seneca reviews his own day each night, every fault named without excuse, and says this is why he sleeps easily. Nothing hidden means nothing to dread.
