Ego v. Being

Facing his own death, the king discovers that life was never the possession he assumed. It is something flowing through him, an aliveness he did not create and cannot manufacture by will. When you touch that same recognition, you loosen your grip on the fragile self that fears its ending and begin to sense the deeper life animating you now, in this very breath.

This is what truly restores a person. Not the addition of more years, but the awakening to the life-force already here beneath the anxious mind. When you turn toward that inner aliveness and let it carry you, you are healed at the level that matters, having found the one thing in you that was never dying.

Live Isaiah 38:16 today

  1. Take three slow breaths today and pay attention to the fact that you did not have to arrange any of it. Something is living you.
  2. When you are with someone you love today, look at them for a second longer than usual. This version of them is here now, and that is the whole gift.
  3. When fear about health or the future grips you, put a hand on your chest and feel the aliveness still moving there. It has been doing this the whole time without your help.

If you stopped treating your life as a possession, what would you hold more lightly today?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching 50

Life moves through a person like breath, not as something owned. Holding on tightly is what makes the ending terrible.

Bhagavad Gita 2

The one who really sees understands that the aliveness within was never born and will not end. The body changes like clothing.

Sufism · Rumi

You did not make yourself, and the life in you is borrowed from a larger current. Let it carry you and the fear of drowning loosens.
