Isaiah 40:1 Meaning Comfort

“Comfort, comfort my people,” says your God.

What does Isaiah 40:1 mean?

The doubling of the word carries the whole weight of it. What speaks here is not a distant deity but the higher self within a person, turning toward the lower faculties that have worn themselves out in the world of striving.

ESOTERIC

Esoteric

The doubling of the word carries the whole weight of it. What speaks here is not a distant deity but the higher self within a person, turning toward the lower faculties that have worn themselves out in the world of striving. The repetition mirrors the 2 natures held in one being, the settled inner witness reaching down to steady the restless outer man. Peace is not sent from far away but released from within, the deeper ground of the self recognizing its own scattered parts and drawing them home. The God who speaks is the I AM seated in the chest, and the people are every faculty that had forgotten it was already carried.

What feels like a message arriving is a reunion happening inside one body, the calm center at last audible over the noise it had been drowned in.

Live Isaiah 40:1 today

  1. Before your phone today, sit for two minutes and say something kind to yourself in your own voice, the way you would to a tired friend. You are not sending a message, you are hearing one.
  2. When someone you love is spiraling today, do not fix it or argue with it. Say "you're okay, I'm here" and let that be the whole answer.
  3. Set one gentle reminder for mid-afternoon, when the day is loudest. When it goes off, put a hand on your chest, breathe out slowly twice, and stop striving for the length of those two breaths.

What part of you has been working so hard that it forgot it was already being held?

Zen

The moon was always in the water, the clouds only hid it. Peace is uncovered, not delivered.

Judaism · Hasidic teaching

The teachers say a person carries two souls, the restless one and the still one, in one body. The work is not to win the argument but to let the quieter one be heard.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

He writes that you can retreat into yourself at any moment and find quiet there. The calm is inside the same walls as the noise.
