Isaiah 41:15 Meaning Behold

Behold, I have made you into a new sharp threshing instrument with teeth. You will thresh the mountains, and beat them small, and will make the hills like chaff.

What you believe you have been made into decides whether an obstacle is a wall or raw material. Obstacles get their size from the self-estimate of whoever stands in front of them.

What you believe you have been made into decides whether an obstacle is a wall or raw material.

Obstacles get their size from the self-estimate of whoever stands in front of them. The same hills are impassable to one who has accepted the name worm and workable to one remade as a threshing sledge, because how a person defines themselves sets the state they meet the hill in, and that state decides whether they strike or retreat.

Yahweh does the making, which is the part no one manufactures alone by affirmation. A definition is received, then acted from, and the acting produces the evidence that keeps it in place. Refuse the new name and the old one keeps supplying reasons to avoid the exact work that would disprove it.

Live Isaiah 41:15 today

  1. Write the name you have been living under, the one that starts with "I am not the kind of person who." Then do one small thing today that the name says you cannot.
  2. Tell someone the real capacity you see in them, specifically, with an example. People often cannot see their own, and yours may be the first honest mirror they get.
  3. When a problem at work looks like a wall, ask what it is made of. Walls become material the moment you start naming their parts.

Who would you have to believe you are to walk straight at the thing you keep avoiding?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

What blocks the path becomes the path. Fire does not avoid what is thrown on it; it turns the obstacle into flame.

Buddhism · Dhammapada

We are shaped by what we take ourselves to be. Hold a small picture of yourself and you will live inside it.

Hinduism · Chandogya Upanishad

The teacher tells the son, that reality is what you are. Knowing it changes what a person believes they can stand in front of.
