Isaiah 44:20 · World English Bible

Isaiah 44:20 Meaning He Feeds on Ashes

He feeds on ashes. A deceived heart has turned him aside; and he can’t deliver his soul, nor say, “Isn’t there a lie in my right hand?”

What does Isaiah 44:20 mean?

A need met badly holds harder than a need never met at all. Certainty is the need that will accept almost any vehicle, and the cheapest one is a thing a man shaped himself, because what he built can never surprise him.

A need met badly holds harder than a need never met at all.

Certainty is the need that will accept almost any vehicle, and the cheapest one is a thing a man shaped himself, because what he built can never surprise him. Feeding is real feeding to the body doing it; the mouth works, the hunger quiets, and nothing in the sensation reports that no nourishment arrived.

That is why the question about what is in the right hand never forms. Asking it would cost him the certainty the idol was built to supply, so a deceived heart defends the vehicle and leaves the soul undelivered. Letting that question surface costs a man his god and hands him back his life.

Live Isaiah 44:20 today

  1. Pick the thing you reach for when you feel unsteady, the phone, the fridge, the one tab you always have open, and before you reach for it ask what it actually gave you last time. Not whether it helped, whether anything arrived.
  2. Tell one person something you have been defending without examining. Say it out loud to them, because a belief you are protecting sounds different in your own voice than it does in your head.
  3. Next time someone questions a choice you are attached to and your chest tightens, stay in the conversation thirty seconds past the point where you want to end it. The tightening is information, not a verdict.

What am I holding that I have decided never to look at directly?

The same truth in other traditions

Plato · Republic (the cave)

People chained facing a wall take the shadows for the whole world, and the shadows satisfy them, so no one asks what is casting them. The comfort of the familiar picture is exactly what keeps the question from forming.

Buddhism · the second noble truth

Craving keeps offering a cure made of the same material as the sickness, so each round of relief deepens the thirst. What feels like being fed is the hunger teaching itself to return.

Stoicism · Epictetus

We are not disturbed by things but by our judgments about them, and a judgment we built ourselves is the hardest to put on trial. Nothing defends a false opinion better than the peace it has been paying us.
