Isaiah 50:10 · World English Bible

Isaiah 50:10 Meaning Who Among You Fears Yahweh and Obeys

Who among you fears Yahweh and obeys the voice of his servant? He who walks in darkness and has no light, let him trust in Yahweh’s name, and rely on his God.

What does Isaiah 50:10 mean?

There are times when you walk in darkness and have no light, when the mind can find no answer and the way ahead cannot be seen. The ego panics here, for it lives on certainty and control.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

There are times when you walk in darkness and have no light, when the mind can find no answer and the way ahead cannot be seen. The ego panics here, for it lives on certainty and control. This darkness feels unbearable to the one who must always know.

Yet this is where trust is born. To stay upon your God is to rest in the presence that remains when all understanding has run out. You do not need to see the whole road. When you stop demanding light from the mind and grow still, you find you are held by something deeper than thought, and the next step becomes clear on its own.

SUFISM

Sufism

Here is a faithful person walking with no light at all, and the counsel is not to strike a light of his own but to lean on the God he cannot see. The quiet danger is despair, the heart deciding that darkness means abandonment and grabbing any false glow to feel less alone.

The cure is to keep walking and keep trusting the name, treating the dark as a road and not a verdict. God is present precisely where the light is not, the ground under each unseen step, near enough to be leaned on though unseen.

Live Isaiah 50:10 today

  1. When you don't know what to do tonight, resist the urge to research it into the ground. Sit with the question for ten quiet minutes and let the next small step show itself.
  2. If someone you care about is in a hard patch, stop trying to solve it for them. Say "I don't know either, and I'm here" and stay in the room.
  3. In the middle of an uncertain day at work, take three slow breaths before you decide anything. You only need the next step, not the whole road.

Can I stay steady today without knowing how this turns out?

Can you stay still while the muddy water settles, and wait until the right action rises on its own?

Zen

Not knowing is the most intimate place to stand. The mind that gives up needing an answer is the one that finally sees.

Sorrow prepares you for joy by sweeping the house. The dark stretch is not the end of the road, it is part of it.
