Isaiah 51:17 · World English Bible

Isaiah 51:17 Meaning Awake

Awake, awake! Stand up, Jerusalem, you who have drunk from Yahweh’s hand the cup of his wrath. You have drunken the bowl of the cup of staggering, and drained it.

What does Isaiah 51:17 mean?

Awake, awake. This is the oldest call there is, spoken not to the body, which never slept, but to the presence in you that has been lost in thinking and drama.

Ego v. Being

Awake, awake. This is the oldest call there is, spoken not to the body, which never slept, but to the presence in you that has been lost in thinking and drama. You have drunk deeply from the cup of suffering. The pain-body in you knows the taste of fury and trembling, and it has drained every drop to the dregs.

There is a purpose in having drunk it so completely. When pain is felt fully, as awareness rather than as more story, it has nothing left to give. That is what finally wakes you. The suffering you stop resisting and simply allow to be moves through you and is gone.

  1. When an old hurt surfaces while you are alone with your phone, put the phone down and just feel it for one minute without narrating it. No replaying the conversation, no deciding who was wrong, just the raw feeling in your chest.
  2. If someone tells you about something heavy, resist the urge to fix it or compare it to your own story. Let it be fully said, and let the silence after it stand.
  3. When a work message lands badly and your whole body heats up, stay in the heat for three breaths before you reply. Feel it, do not feed it with the twelve sentences your mind wants to write.

What old pain have I been managing for years instead of simply letting myself feel?

Buddhism · The Four Noble Truths

The first move is not to flee the pain but to look straight at it and admit it is here. Seen clearly rather than argued with, it begins to loosen.

Zen

Awakening is not gaining something new. It is waking from the dream of thought you did not know you were having.

Stoicism · Epictetus

The sting is rarely in the event itself but in the retelling. Drop the commentary and what remains is bearable.
