Isaiah 51:3 · World English Bible

Isaiah 51:3 Meaning For Yahweh Has Comforted Zion

For Yahweh has comforted Zion. He has comforted all her waste places, and has made her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of Yahweh. Joy and gladness will be found in them, thanksgiving, and the voice of melody.

What does Isaiah 51:3 mean?

The wasteland is inner, and it stands in the same spot as the garden. The desert flowers the moment the one looking has changed; nothing is imported, no new landscape delivered.

AWARENESS

Indian Guru

The wasteland is inner, and it stands in the same spot as the garden. The desert flowers the moment the one looking has changed; nothing is imported, no new landscape delivered. Emptiness met by the ego is barren, and the identical emptiness met by awareness is fullness.

What comes with the change comes singing. Wherever seriousness settles into religion something has died there, because the mark of the real is thanksgiving and melody, a man dancing for no reason he could give anyone. That gladness cannot be manufactured by discipline, which is why it can be trusted as evidence.

Live Isaiah 51:3 today

  1. Find the dullest patch of your day, the commute, the dishes, the wait for a call back, and be in it without labeling it wasted. It is the same ten minutes either way. Only the verdict changes.
  2. Let yourself be delighted out loud with someone today, over something small and useless. A joke, a dog on the street, a song in the car. Gladness for no reason is worth more than the serious conversation you were planning.
  3. When the day gets heavy, catch the moment you turn grim about it. Heaviness is often just the mood you are agreeing with. See if you can set it down for the next five minutes and do the same work lightly.

Where have I been calling my life empty when I was only looking at it that way?

The same truth in other traditions

Zen

The garden and the wasteland are the same ground. Nothing has to be brought in; the one looking has to change.

Sufism · Rumi

The tearing open is where the light gets in. What felt like ruin was the door, and what comes through it dances.

Taoism · Zhuangzi

The sage wanders freely and laughs easily. Solemnity is a sign that something has hardened; delight is a sign that it is alive.
