Isaiah 51:7 Meaning Listen to Me

Listen to me, you who know righteousness, the people in whose heart is my law. Don’t fear the reproach of men, and don’t be dismayed at their insults.

What does Isaiah 51:7 mean?

When a standard is written deep in the heart, the opinions shouted from outside lose their power to shake it. The people whose inner law is settled carry a self-image the reproach of men cannot rewrite.

Cybernetics

When a standard is written deep in the heart, the opinions shouted from outside lose their power to shake it. The people whose inner law is settled carry a self-image the reproach of men cannot rewrite. Insults arrive, but they meet a portrait already drawn and signed.

Revilings wound only where the picture inside is unsure and looking for confirmation. Sureness leaves them nothing to grip. A person grounded in what he knows to be right hears the mockery as sound without weight. The law kept in the heart holds the shape of who he is, and the crowd's scorn slides off it.

  1. Reread that comment or review that stung and ask plainly, is this true. If it is not, close the tab and let it be sound without weight.
  2. When the group chat turns on someone, or on you, do not rush to prove anything. Say the quiet true thing once, then let it stand without defending it for the next hour.
  3. In the meeting where someone takes a shot at your work, keep your voice level and answer the actual question. You can take the useful part and leave the sneer on the table.

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Epictetus

If someone speaks badly of you and it is untrue, let it pass. The remark lands only where you have already agreed with it.

Zen

A bell rung at a stone wall makes sound and nothing more. The mockery is real, the wound is optional.

Bhagavad Gita

Act from what you know to be right and leave the praise and blame to arrive as they will. Both are weather, not instruction.
