Isaiah 54:11 Meaning You Afflicted

You afflicted, tossed with storms, and not comforted, behold, I will set your stones in beautiful colors, and lay your foundations with sapphires.

What does Isaiah 54:11 mean?

The words come to someone who has been battered by the storm and found no comfort in it. That is the honest starting place, not denial of the suffering but a full naming of it.

Clinical Psychology

The words come to someone who has been battered by the storm and found no comfort in it. That is the honest starting place, not denial of the suffering but a full naming of it. Afflicted, tossed, uncomforted. Nothing is pretended away.

And yet the promise is of foundations laid in sapphire, of something beautiful built precisely where the wreckage was. What is rebuilt after catastrophe can stand on better ground than what stood before. The person who endures the tempest and does not lie about how much it hurt is the one who can lay stones that hold. Out of the ruin, if you refuse to pretend, a stronger thing is made.

Live Isaiah 54:11 today

  1. If you are in a hard stretch right now, stop softening it when you describe it to yourself. Say plainly that it hurts, and let that be the honest ground you stand on today.
  2. When someone asks how you are and you are not fine, tell one person the truth instead of the automatic good, you. The real answer is where anything gets built.
  3. In the middle of something falling apart today, a project, a plan, a conversation, pick one small piece you can set right and set it right. Not the whole thing. One stone.

What are you trying to rebuild while still pretending the collapse was not that bad?
