Isaiah 55:8 · World English Bible
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, and your ways are not my ways,” says Yahweh.
The distance named here runs in the direction of mercy. Human forgiveness keeps score and sets a limit past which a person is written off; God's has no such limit, and that gap is why anyone may come back after a long absence.

CATHOLIC
The distance named here runs in the direction of mercy. Human forgiveness keeps score and sets a limit past which a person is written off; God's has no such limit, and that gap is why anyone may come back after a long absence.
This is no reason to stop thinking about God. A mind cannot contain him the way it holds a fact, yet it can be stretched, and prayer is how the stretching happens: the small calculations about who deserves what wear down until mercy stops looking unreasonable.

MANIFESTATION
The LORD who speaks here is the I AM in you, the pure awareness of being that comes before any opinion you hold about yourself. Your thoughts run along the evidence of the senses: what the bank shows, what the body reports, what others have decided you are. The way of the I AM runs the opposite direction, because it creates from the end rather than reacting to the facts. Where you say a thing is impossible, that awareness within says it is already so the moment it is felt as so.
This gap is not distance between you and some far-off God. It is the difference between the man who argues from what is and the same man imagining from what he wants. A state assumed and felt to be real hardens into fact. The lower way accepts the world as final. The higher way, your own imagination, quietly makes it over.

ESOTERIC
This marks the true gap between 2 levels of mind in one person: the higher awareness and the ordinary reasoning nature do not run along the same lines. The thoughts of the lower self move by appetite, habit, and calculation, tracing the paths of the flesh, while the higher mind operates on an order the surface intellect cannot map from below. The ways are the whole manner of moving through experience, and the 2 natures travel by different roads through a single life. This is not distance between a person and a far-off deity but the distance within, between the small mind and the vast one seated in the same being.
What is meant is direct: the higher self within a person thinks and moves on an order the ordinary reasoning mind cannot follow or predict from where it stands.

CYBERNETICS
A person often plans from the cramped self-image he already holds, so his roads run short and his thoughts circle the same fears. The creative source at work reaches further. Its scope dwarfs anything that small picture can hold, and its way opens paths the anxious mind would never sketch for itself.
When a person stops insisting the answer must arrive by his own narrow route, a wider intelligence gets room to work. The success mechanism inside him has aims and methods the surface mind cannot foresee. Growth begins the moment someone loosens his grip on how it all must happen and trusts a larger reach than his own.

SUFISM
Tanzīh: Holding God clear of every likeness to us Ibn Arabi's term for refusing to measure God by anything we already know. Most arguments with God start from a hidden assumption: he judges a case the way we would, and writes off the people we have. Dropping that likeness puts our standards back where they belong, with us, and takes them off God.
Being unable to understand God is itself understanding: the limit counts as knowledge A saying passed down from Abu Bakr, one al-Ghazali liked to repeat. Told that God's mind runs on other lines, most of us push harder, hunting for the theory that explains why things went as they did. The hunt can stop early without shame. Someone who says plainly that they cannot work God out is standing somewhere solid.
Ḥayra: Bewilderment Ibn Arabi's name for the moment thinking runs out, and he counts it a high place. Facing something about God that will not resolve, a person goes one of two ways. Frustration keeps banging on the door for the missing piece. Amazement lets the size of the thing land, and the person goes quiet without needing the answer.
My mercy outstrips my anger: pardon runs ahead of the reckoning God's own words in a saying the Prophet passed on. The place our thinking misses him most often is the size of his pardon. We keep a ledger, and it tells us how much a person owes before they can come back, ourselves included. Someone who has decided they are past forgiving has guessed at a limit that was never set.
Riḍā: Being at peace with how a life is handed out The settled acceptance of what comes, without a running argument against it. The harder half of this shows up in the plans, when the route a person gets looks nothing like the one they laid out. Rest arrives when they let the whole thing stay in hands whose reasons they cannot see yet. They still ask their questions, but they no longer need the answer before they can get on with the day.

SELF-HELP
The gap between what someone expects and what happens is the size of their map, not a broken promise.
Every person runs on a model assembled from one lifetime's thin sample, then defends that model as the territory, and every outcome falling outside it registers as betrayal. That meaning sets the state, the state sets the emotion, and resentment stops asking and treats a closed door as a final answer.
Yahweh naming the distance between his thinking and a man's moves the fence the mind mistook for the horizon. A person who grants that the sample is not the whole can meet a delay as unfinished rather than denied, and keep acting while the answer is still forming. What that costs is the comfort of having been right about how it should have gone.
Catholic lens
Who have I decided is past forgiving, and what does it say about my picture of God?
The way that can be named is not the way itself. What is deepest will not fit into your words, which is why your words have to keep being loosened.
Do not take the finger for the moon. Thinking points you toward the real thing and must never be mistaken for having arrived at it.
The one who claims to have grasped God has grasped only a picture of their own making. Love is what keeps the knowing moving instead of hardening.
