What does Isaiah 57:21 mean?

Akusala-mūla: The roots of unwholesome action Greed, hatred, and delusion are the three roots harmful action grows from. Wickedness here names what a life is fed by, the way a weed is known by its root and not its leaves. Idols set up on the high hill and beds spread wide come up out of one of the three, and a root left in the ground keeps sending new shoots.

Kamma: Action and its fruit Action carries its own result inside it. The unrest belongs to the deed itself, the way a hand gripping a hot coal keeps the burn whether or not anyone is watching. Spoken as a sentence handed down from above, it also works as a plain description of how such a life already runs.

Vippaṭisāra: Remorse Remorse is the backward bite of a deed you cannot set down. Being able to lie down at night without the day's business standing over the bed is the first gift of keeping the precepts, and gladness, calm, and stillness follow from it in order. Lose it, and the mind keeps returning to the deed until morning, like a tongue going back to a sore tooth.

Uddhacca: Agitation Agitation is a mind that will not settle. Water that cannot rest keeps throwing up mire and dirt from its own floor, and a stirred mind does the same, old deeds and old fears surfacing at every turn. Calm cannot land on a surface that keeps being moved, and a quiet room is no help when the mind is the thing doing the moving.

Santi: Peace Peace is the cooling and stilling of what burns. That same sea, left alone, goes flat by morning, and the mire sinks back to the bottom on its own. Nothing has to be added for it to happen: when greed and hatred cool, quiet is what remains, and it reaches the lowly and crushed in spirit first because they have already stopped stirring.

CYBERNETICS

Cybernetics

Peace is not a place a person arrives at by force or cunning. It rises from inside, from a self-image that has made its peace with itself. A man who lives against his own better nature carries a low, steady friction he cannot argue away. He can silence the outer world and still find no rest, because the quarrel is with the picture he holds of who he is.

The restlessness is honest. It reports that his goals and his conscience are pulling against each other, and the success mechanism cannot steer toward two opposite marks at once. No trick of the surface quiets that hum. It fades only when a person stops working against himself, and the whole machine turns toward one aim again.

Live Isaiah 57:21 today

  1. At the end of the day, ask whether there is anything you would rather not think about as you fall asleep. If yes, that is the thing to set right, not to explain away.
  2. If you owe someone a small honest thing, an apology, a reply you have been dodging, a number you shaded, say it today in one plain sentence. The quiet that comes after is the whole reward.
  3. Under pressure, when you feel the pull to cut a corner nobody would catch, picture carrying it home with you tonight. Then choose the slower, cleaner move.

Which small thing, set right this week, would let you lie down easier?

Tao Te Ching 46

There is no greater misfortune than not knowing when you have enough, and no greater peace than contentment. The restlessness is not a punishment added on, it comes bundled with the wanting.

Stoicism · Seneca

He wrote that guilt keeps a person awake better than any watchman, because the deed stays with the doer whether or not anyone finds out. Nobody has to sentence you when the act carries its own interest.

Hinduism · Upanishads

What a person does grows into what a person becomes, since action puts down roots and the roots keep sending up shoots. Pull the root and the shoots stop coming.
