Isaiah 59:2 Meaning But Your Iniquities Have Separated You

But your iniquities have separated you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.

What does Isaiah 59:2 mean?

Their own wrongs did the separating. The Hebrew verb is the one used when light was divided from darkness, a clean partition with something on each side.

Their own wrongs did the separating. The Hebrew verb is the one used when light was divided from darkness, a clean partition with something on each side. The word sits in the present, a separating still underway, not one old failure.

A hidden face was court language. Whoever had the king's face could speak and be answered, whoever lost it stood outside the door. The silence is His decision, not His deafness. The charge falls on people who still called Him their God, so the praying and the singing can go on long after He has stopped answering.

Live Isaiah 59:2 today

  1. Think of the one thing you keep not dealing with, the habit or the message you never answered, and name it plainly to yourself without softening it.
  2. Send the apology you have been composing in your head for weeks. Keep it short, no explanation of why you were partly right.
  3. When you feel that familiar distance from God or from someone you love, ask what you did rather than what they did, and answer honestly even if it stings.

Is the silence I am hearing actually mine to break?

The same truth in other traditions

Judaism · Yom Kippur tradition

The teaching is that wrongs between people are not cleared by prayer alone, so you have to go to the person you hurt before the sky feels open again.

Stoicism · Epictetus

He said the fault is usually in our own judgment and habits, and blaming heaven or luck keeps us from fixing the one thing that is actually ours.

Buddhism

The teaching on karma is simple and unsentimental, that actions carry their own consequences, and no amount of ritual gets between a deed and what it brings.
