Isaiah 59:9 · World English Bible

Isaiah 59:9 Meaning Therefore Justice Is Far From Us

Therefore justice is far from us, and righteousness doesn’t overtake us. We look for light, but see darkness; for brightness, but we walk in obscurity.

What does Isaiah 59:9 mean?

We wait for the light to come to us, for some future moment or outer rescue to lift the darkness, and still we go on walking in shadow. This is the great misunderstanding of the unconscious mind, that brightness must arrive from somewhere else, at some other time.

Ego v. Being

We wait for the light to come to us, for some future moment or outer rescue to lift the darkness, and still we go on walking in shadow. This is the great misunderstanding of the unconscious mind, that brightness must arrive from somewhere else, at some other time.

But the darkness is not around you. It is the absence of presence within you, the mind lost in its own thinking. No amount of waiting will end it, because the light you are looking for is awareness itself. It dawns only when you stop seeking it elsewhere and become present right here, now.

Live Isaiah 59:9 today

  1. When you catch yourself thinking that life gets good later, after the trip, after the raise, after the weekend, stop and feel your own hands and breath for ten seconds. That is the light you were waiting for, already on.
  2. Next time someone is talking to you and you are half scrolling, put the phone face down and be fully there with them. Nothing has to be fixed in that moment for it to be enough.
  3. Stuck in traffic or in a slow checkout line, drop the story that this is wasted time. Let your attention rest in the plain feeling of sitting or standing, and the waiting quietly stops being waiting.

What am I postponing my own life until?

Zen · Hakuin

He compared the endless search for awakening to a person standing in water and crying out from thirst. What you are hunting for is the very thing you are standing in.

Tao Te Ching 47

The sage does not travel far to find the way. Shut the door, be still, and what you were looking for over the horizon is already here.

Rumi

He said what you seek is seeking you, and that the one who waits at the door has not yet understood that the door was never locked.
