Isaiah 6:10 Meaning Make the Heart of This People Fat

Make the heart of this people fat. Make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their heart, and turn again, and be healed.

What does Isaiah 6:10 mean?

The dulled heart, the heavy ears, the shut eyes are the sense-bound state of a person who takes the outer world as final and cannot yet feel that his own imagining shapes what he sees. This is not cruelty laid on him from above.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

The dulled heart, the heavy ears, the shut eyes are the sense-bound state of a person who takes the outer world as final and cannot yet feel that his own imagining shapes what he sees. This is not cruelty laid on him from above. It is the sleep God deliberately entered so that man could descend fully into the body of sense before turning and rising again. The blindness is built into the plan, timed to lift at the appointed hour.

The seeing and hearing that would heal is the recognition that imagination is the creative power and that the one who fell asleep behind these masks is God himself. A person stays fat of heart until that recognition wakes in him. Then the eyes open, and he understands he was the sleeper all along.

Live Isaiah 6:10 today

  1. For one hour today treat what your senses report as a report, not a verdict. The bank number, the tired face in the mirror, the unanswered message: see them as the current picture, not the final one.
  2. When someone tells you in flat certainty that nothing can change, do not argue them out of it. Hold a different picture of them silently and keep speaking to the person who could wake up.
  3. In the middle of bad news, before you accept the story the moment is telling, take one breath and remember you are the one looking, not the thing being looked at. Then respond.

Where have I been treating the current picture as the last word?

The same truth in other traditions

Buddhism · Avidya

The root trouble is not punishment but a kind of sleep, a not-seeing that keeps a person taking appearances for the final word. Waking is possible, and everything else turns on it.

Plato · Allegory of the Cave

People who have only ever seen shadows on a wall take the shadows for the whole world, and at first the light hurts too much to look at. The turning around is the entire task.

Vedanta · Maya

What you call the solid world is a veil the one reality has drawn over itself, and the veil is part of the design rather than an accident. It lifts when the self recognizes itself behind it.
