Isaiah 60:8 Meaning Who Are These Who Fly

Who are these who fly as a cloud, and as the doves to their windows?

What does Isaiah 60:8 mean?

The question watches something ascend, and what rises like a cloud is the thought lifted off the ground of flesh, vapor drawn upward from the dense lower waters into the higher air of the mind. A cloud is matter grown light enough to float, the exact image of a heavy nature refined until it can rise, and the sight of it is the sight of consciousness climbing out of the earthbound state.

The doves flying to their windows carry it further: the dove is the spirit, the gentle higher self, and the windows are the openings in the head through which that spirit returns to its home. Homing birds coming back to their own apertures are the risen faculties finding their proper seats in the upper body. What flies is the inner life going up, the refined thought and the returning spirit both moving toward the openings where the higher consciousness dwells.

Cloud: thought refined and lifted off the ground of flesh, dense nature grown light enough to rise Doves: the spirit and gentle higher self, homing back to their place Windows: the openings in the head through which the risen spirit returns to its home

Live Isaiah 60:8 today

  1. Give yourself ten minutes today with no screen, no podcast, nothing coming in. Let your thoughts settle on their own instead of being churned by the next notification.
  2. Next time a conversation is sinking into complaint, be the one who lifts it. One honest question about what the other person actually hopes for can change the altitude of the whole thing.
  3. When you are stuck in traffic or a long line and the irritation starts rising, let your attention go up: the light, the sky, the sound of the room. The body stays stuck. You do not have to.

What in you is heavy right now only because it has not been given any air?

The same truth in other traditions

Taoism · Zhuangzi

The great bird beats the water until it rises and climbs ninety thousand leagues on the wind. It needs depth beneath it before any height is possible.

Sufism · Attar

The birds fly a long way only to find they were flying home. The ascent and the return are the same journey.

Zen

The mind settles like silt in still water until it becomes clear. Nothing is added; the heaviness simply stops stirring.
