EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Within you there is a watcher that never sleeps, an alert presence set upon the walls of your being, awake through day and night. This is not another thought. It is the still awareness behind your thoughts, the one that quietly notices them come and go.

To keep not silence is to return to that awareness again and again, so it is not buried beneath the noise of the mind. Each time you remember to be present, you take your place as the watchman. And the more faithfully you keep this watch, the less the old unconsciousness can reclaim you, which is why the watching must never cease.

Live Isaiah 62:6 today

  1. Set one ordinary cue today, every time you unlock your phone, and let it mean one conscious breath before you look at the screen. Returning is the whole practice.
  2. During a conversation, keep a little of your attention on yourself as you speak. You will catch the sharp sentence while it is still inside you.
  3. When a deadline or a hard day has you running on reflex, pause at a doorway and feel your body for three seconds. Then keep going, awake instead of swept along.

How quickly do I come back once I see I have drifted off?

Two birds sit in one tree. One eats the fruit, the other simply watches, and the watcher is untouched by the eating.
