Isaiah 63:15 · World English Bible

Isaiah 63:15 Meaning Look Down From Heaven

Look down from heaven, and see from the habitation of your holiness and of your glory. Where are your zeal and your mighty acts? The yearning of your heart and your compassion is restrained toward me.

What does Isaiah 63:15 mean?

A grieving people cry upward, asking where the old tenderness has gone, feeling the warmth held back like a well that has stopped giving water. The ache turns dangerous when despair sours into accusation, the heart deciding love is absent only because it cannot be felt.

Sufism

A grieving people cry upward, asking where the old tenderness has gone, feeling the warmth held back like a well that has stopped giving water. The ache turns dangerous when despair sours into accusation, the heart deciding love is absent only because it cannot be felt.

So they keep crying toward Him, and the longing itself becomes a prayer, proof the bond still holds. He has not left His high dwelling. He is present even in the silence, the Beloved a heart would never miss so keenly if He were truly gone.

Live Isaiah 63:15 today

  1. If today feels flat and nothing is landing, keep going anyway, and let the flatness be what you bring. Say the plain version out loud in the car, I cannot feel any of this, I am still here, and count that as having spoken.
  2. When someone you love says they feel nothing, far off, done, do not rush to correct them. Tell them the missing is not a sign they have lost it, and that you will keep showing up while the feeling is away.
  3. In a bad week, when you are tired and the phone is full of things going wrong, catch the moment despair starts turning into an accusation. You are allowed to say this is hard and where are you, and you can say it without concluding that nobody is listening.

If you only miss what you have known, what does your missing tell you?

The same truth in other traditions

Zen · Dogen

Dogen taught that the seeking itself is the awakened activity, not a waiting room before it. The longing is not evidence of distance, it is the thing happening.

Hinduism · Bhakti tradition

The devotional poets of India sang their complaints straight at God, calling the silence cruel and still calling it to God's face. The quarrel was understood as the closest form of the relationship, not a break in it.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Epictetus warned that the mind rushes from a hard feeling to a verdict about the world, and that the verdict, not the feeling, is what wrecks us. What cannot be felt right now has not thereby been proven gone.
