Isaiah 64:8 Meaning But Now

But now, Yahweh, you are our Father. We are the clay and you our potter. We all are the work of your hand.

What does Isaiah 64:8 mean?

The potter sits nowhere off in the sky pressing shapes into helpless mud. The potter is a man's own imagining, and the clay is his sense of himself, soft and ready to take whatever form is pressed into it.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

The potter sits nowhere off in the sky pressing shapes into helpless mud. The potter is a man's own imagining, and the clay is his sense of himself, soft and ready to take whatever form is pressed into it. Every hour he is at the wheel, though he rarely notices his hands moving. The feeling he holds about who he is presses the clay, and the clay obeys.

He is both maker and made. What he assumes inwardly becomes the shape he wears outwardly, and the world reads that shape and treats him by it. Call this father, and it fits, because awareness fathers every condition a man lives in. The despairing hands shape a bent and broken vessel. The same hands, turned steady and sure, raise up a life that stands. The clay was always answering the potter within.

Faqr: Poverty before God Faqr names the empty hands of someone who owns nothing of their own. After admitting failure, the pull is to scramble for something to offer, some merit that evens out the account. Poverty drops that search, and a person stands there with nothing, which is the only position from which asking makes sense.

Ar-Rabb: The Lord who raises a thing to its completion Rabb, the word for Lord, carries the sense of raising something up until it is finished. Being handled by such a lord means the pressure and the changes point toward an end that the maker has in mind. A person who takes this in stops reading hard treatment as rejection and starts reading it as care with a direction.

Tafwīḍ: Handing your case over to God Tafwīḍ is the move of leaving your own case in God's hands, as one man in the Quran says he does. The moment usually comes after someone has run out of ways to fix themselves and stops trying to steer the result. Nothing about them is finished yet, and they let the one who began the work carry on with it.

The cook boils the chickpea so it can become food: being worked on has a purpose Rumi tells of a chickpea that keeps leaping out of the boiling pot while the cook pushes it back down. The cook explains that the heat is what turns it into something that can feed a person. Anyone in the middle of being changed wants out, and hearing that the heat belongs to the making makes it possible to stay in.

My mercy comes before my anger: mercy speaks first A saying passed down from the Prophet has God declare that His mercy runs ahead of His anger. After laying out everything wrong with themselves, people expect the account to be closed against them and the relationship to end there. Mercy arriving first means the bond holds while the faults are still on the table, so someone in the wrong can speak and expect to be heard.

Live Isaiah 64:8 today

  1. Once today, catch the feeling you are carrying about who you are, tired, behind, small, and deliberately sit up and take on a steadier one. Your hands are on the wheel either way.
  2. Pay attention to how you describe yourself to another person, in an email signature, an introduction, a joke at your own expense. That is clay getting pressed in public.
  3. When everything is going wrong and your hands are shaking, slow down before you decide anything. Panicked hands make a bent vessel, and this one has to carry something.

What shape are your hands pressing into you right now, without you choosing it?

Dhammapada 1

Mind precedes all things. The life you are living is the shape your own thinking has pressed into you.

A man becomes what he believes himself to be. Think yourself bound and you are bound, think yourself free and you are free.
