SUFISM
ʿIlm bilā ʿamal: Knowing without doing Al-Ghazali built the Revival around the gap between what a person knows and what they do. Someone who can name a need exactly, and name it warmly, starts to feel that the naming itself counts as help. The knowledge stops at the mouth, and the person standing there is no warmer for it.
Riyāʾ: Doing religion where people can see it A blessing said out loud costs nothing and sounds generous, which is why it comes out so fast. The words are aimed at the room and at how the speaker will sound afterward, not at the one who needs food. When a person catches themselves performing kindness instead of doing it, the good feeling drains out of the sentence.
None of you believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself: belief shows in what you want for others The Prophet set the measure of faith there. Wanting good for someone in a general way is easy; wanting it the way you want your own dinner tonight is another matter. A person holds their wish next to what they would need in the same spot, and the gap shows up immediately.
Futuwwa: Generosity that moves before anyone has to ask The old Sufi code of noble conduct grew up among craftsmen, travelers, and neighbors. Giving clothes costs something, while a warm sentence costs nothing, so the sentence tends to arrive first and settle the matter. Under this code the hand moves before the mouth does, and the fine words stay unsaid.
Takhalluq bi akhlāq Allāh: Taking on God's qualities as your own character Al-Ghazali and Ibn Arabi both hold that God's names are meant to appear in how a person behaves. God is called the Provider, and provision reaches hungry people through somebody's hands, usually the nearest ones. A person who prays over someone's hunger while holding bread has handed the job back to God, when the answer was already in the room.

Where have my warm words been standing in for something my hands could do this week?
Confucius distrusted the person whose words run ahead of their deeds. He wanted speech kept slow and action kept quick.
Fine words with nothing behind them are like a bright flower with no scent. Only what is acted on carries anything.
Saying little and doing much is the way of the upright. The reverse was marked out as the way of the careless.
