James 3:3 Meaning Indeed

Indeed, we put bits into the horses’ mouths so that they may obey us, and we guide their whole body.

What does James 3:3 mean?

Whatever sentence a person repeats about themselves is doing the steering, chosen or not. Leverage is the small thing that moves the large thing, and in a person that small thing is the words: the words set the meaning, the meaning sets the state, the state decides what gets done with the next hour.

Whatever sentence a person repeats about themselves is doing the steering, chosen or not.

Leverage is the small thing that moves the large thing, and in a person that small thing is the words: the words set the meaning, the meaning sets the state, the state decides what gets done with the next hour.

A man who tells himself he is terrible with money runs his month from that sentence, reads every receipt as more proof, and quits the budget by the tenth. Nobody hands him a new life for changing the sentence. What changes is the direction of the animal underneath it, and a decade of actions steered a few degrees over lands somewhere else entirely.

Live James 3:3 today

  1. Catch one sentence you say about yourself today, bad with money, not a morning person, terrible at this. Say the honest smaller version out loud instead: "I haven't learned this yet." That is the whole adjustment, and it steers everything after it.
  2. When someone close to you runs themselves down in front of you, don't argue, just hand them the smaller true sentence. And ask them to do the same for you when they hear yours.
  3. In the hard hour, the meeting going badly, the kid melting down, the inbox winning, say what's happening in flat words with no verdict attached: "this is hard and I'm handling it." The state you meet the next ten minutes in comes from that line.

What sentence have you been repeating about yourself that has quietly been doing the steering?

Dhammapada 1

We are made of our thoughts. What we say to ourselves again and again, we become, as the wheel follows the ox.

Stoicism · Epictetus

People are disturbed not by events but by the view they take of them. Change the sentence about the thing and the thing changes size.

Bhagavad Gita 6

The mind is your friend when you have mastered it and your enemy when you have not. Either way it is giving the orders.
