James 5:10 · World English Bible
Take, brothers, for an example of suffering and of perseverance, the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.
Sacca: Truthfulness Sacca is holding to what is so, in speech and under pressure. Speaking in the name of the Lord is precisely what put the prophets in danger; the words came first and the stones came after, in that order.

BUDDHISM
Sacca: Truthfulness Sacca is holding to what is so, in speech and under pressure. Speaking in the name of the Lord is precisely what put the prophets in danger; the words came first and the stones came after, in that order. Any messenger can carry news a room wants to hear, and the prophets became worth imitating on the day their message cost them their safety.
Dukkha: Suffering Dukkha runs from a bruise to a ruined life, and it is the first half of what gets held up for imitation. The hardship in question arrives because of the work itself: hunger, prison, the crowd that listened last month turning on you this month. James is writing to field hands whose wages were held back by rich landowners, and he sets in front of them men who fared worse and kept their post.
Khanti: Patient endurance Khanti is the strength to take rough treatment without paying it back. Perseverance of this sort works like the ground, which receives whatever gets dumped on it and goes on being the ground, useful and unmoved. Mocked, hunted, and run out of town, the prophets went on saying the same thing, and that steadiness under insult is the part to copy.
Adhiṭṭhāna: Resolve Adhiṭṭhāna is a decision made once and then kept. Standing under that name through kings, famine, and exile takes a commitment settled long before the pressure arrives, since the middle of trouble is a poor place to be deciding anything. It holds the way a deep post holds: wind moves everything around it and the post stays where it was driven.
Anussati: Recollection Anussati is the practice of calling worthy people to mind on purpose. Taking them for an example works as an act of memory: when your own patience is thinning, you bring up someone who held out longer under worse conditions and let that steady your hand. James reaches for Job in the very next line, so the method is plain, keep company in your mind with people who endured.
Buddhism lens
Whose steadiness would help me most if I called it to mind the next time mine runs thin?
He told his students to keep the examples of steady people close at hand and to ask, in the middle of trouble, what such a person would do here. Borrowed steadiness holds a hand that is shaking on its own.
Water is the softest thing and it wears down stone, because it never fights back and never stops. What yields and stays is stronger than what strikes and leaves.
The teaching says to make yourself a teacher and acquire a friend, since character is caught from company. Who you keep in mind becomes who you can manage to be.
