Yahweh’s word came to him in the days of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign.

What does Jeremiah 1:2 mean?

Dating the voice to a king and a year is a claim about how such things work. What speaks from the depths does not float free of history; it answers a moment, and it chooses a man young enough to be changed by what he carries.

Dating the voice to a king and a year is a claim about how such things work. What speaks from the depths does not float free of history; it answers a moment, and it chooses a man young enough to be changed by what he carries.

A God who speaks into a particular thirteenth year is a God willing to be bound to time, to a reforming king, to one nervous young man. Something that needs a human mouth and a date is not sealed off in its own completeness. It wants to be heard, and so it submits to the narrow conditions of being heard.

Live Jeremiah 1:2 today

  1. Instead of waiting for a clear sign before you take something seriously, look at the plain details of where you actually are today. The date, the job, the city, the people in your phone. Treat those as the address anything meaningful would have to arrive at.
  2. When someone tells you what is going on with them, resist answering with a general truth that would fit anyone. Ask about the specifics, this week, this boss, this diagnosis, and let your reply be too small to be reused on someone else.
  3. Under pressure, when you feel too young or too new or too unqualified for what is being asked of you, say yes to the next concrete step anyway. Being changed by the thing you carry is not a flaw in the arrangement.

What is being asked of me right here, in this year of my life, that I keep deferring to a better version of myself?

Tao Te Ching 8

The highest good is like water, which benefits all things and does not contend, settling in the low places that others avoid. *In other words: what is best goes downward into the low spots rather than holding itself above them.*

Bhagavad Gita 4.7

Whenever righteousness declines and unrighteousness rises, says Krishna, I manifest myself. *In other words: the divine appears in answer to the condition of a particular time.*

Analects 9.5

Confucius, in danger at Kuang, said that since Heaven had not let the culture of Wen perish, the men of Kuang could do nothing to him. *In other words: he read his own moment and situation as the place where something larger was at work.*
